It’s been a great year thus far for INTERSOURCE: growth, change, successes, teamwork, networking, opportunities, events, enhancements, and so much more. We thought we would let a few photos express some of what we “meme”:
Eric and Nancy have been at this for a while, along with many of their employees. In celebration of 20 years in business, they hosted an evening of intrigue including music, imagery, magic, fortunes, and most importantly, good people.
On that same day, we lost a local legend. So we played some of Prince’s music and the skies opened up.
The celebration did indeed have a lot of laughter. We are very grateful to all who have supported us in various ways throughout the years. Thank you!
This spring, we were also proud to once again sponsor the floor covering for the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Showcase Home Tour. It is a great privilege to work with so many amazing, dedicated ASID Designers on this project and the results are always excellent.

This summer included another tour we were pleased to be a part of, the Artisan Home Tour by Parade of Homes, that took place in June. Working with Great Neighborhood Homes, we furnished and installed rubber in the exercise room as well as carpet throughout this modern day cottage overlooking Minnehaha Creek.

July brought a trip to Texas to attend Building Buzz, a marketing conference for International Design Guild members and a wonderful opportunity to connect and bounce ideas off of other Design for a Difference (DFAD) supporters and participants in order to plan for future efforts. DFAD is a community-driven designer movement that brings interior designers together with socially conscious showrooms and other businesses to makeover needed spaces at local charities. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the video below to see our most recent DFAD project lead by the remarkably talented, Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interior Design, as well as many other generous and gifted interior designers.
Immediately following Building Buzz came the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC) and since Nancy serves as the Communications Director for the ASID MN board, this was a much anticipated and mustn’t miss event! CLC is a multi-day conference that includes keynotes, education, training, idea sharing, and networking; the conference concludes with an Awards Gala called Celebration, which honors trail blazers within the design community. CLC is a national event occurring annually and rotating around the country. It was our good fortune that it landed in Minneapolis this year. Starting their lives together as a newly married couple has also included embarking on a complete renovation of a 1947 rambler!

DESIGN FOR A DIFFERENCE CELEBRATION AND BIG REVEAL OF
BRIDGING’S FOUND IT! ESTATE STORE RECEIVES CHARITY MAKEOVER AS PART OF DESIGN FOR A DIFFERENCE MOVEMENT
Meet local designers who spearheaded the initiative along with celebrity designer Mark Brunetz at celebration and reveal event
BLOOMINGTON, MN: Bridging’s FOUND IT! Estate Store was chosen for a charity makeover as part of the Design for a Difference movement, taking place across North America. Sponsored locally by, Lucy Interior Design and Intersource, Bridging’s retail space received a complete transformation to create an inviting and user-friendly space. The public is invited to meet the Design for a Difference team along with celebrity designer and national spokesperson Mark Brunetz at the reveal event on Thursday, October 29th from 5-8pm.
Design for a Difference is the only community driven designer movement, sponsored by International Design Guild, bringing interior designers and businesses together to makeover spaces at local charities and nonprofit organizations.
The partnership began last April when design principal Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interior Design contacted Bridging with the offer to transform a space of their choosing into something spectacular, inviting, and user friendly. Naturally, Bridging jumped at the idea. Having re-opened their FOUND IT! Estate Store in February 2015 with no budget for aesthetic improvements, Bridging requested a store makeover.
Local designers jumped into action this summer drawing inspiration from a tour of Bridging’s warehouse of household items and a shopping experience with Bridging clients. The FOUND IT! Estate Store was then given a complete floor to ceiling face lift, including a fresh coat of paint; updated flooring, lighting and display fixtures; and a vast selection of new and used merchandise for sale.
Bridging’s FOUND IT! Estate Store features 2,000 square feet of retail space with an eclectic mix of donated gently used furniture, home décor, distinctive and vintage items. Proceeds from the store’s sales go directly towards helping Bridging provide furniture and household goods to over 4,000 families and individuals in the Twin Cities Metro transitioning out of homelessness and poverty each year.
“This is just another way that our community can support Bridging and our clients. Proceeds from our sales will help us build awareness and fill inventory gaps. And if you’re a shopper, you’ll love the unique, one-of-a-kind selection.” said Mark Wilkening, Executive Director of Bridging.

Summer is receding. Only the late bloomers, the Asters, the Goldenrods, the Toad Lilies, are showing their true colors. But, wait, so are the kids. Kids in their newly purchased stark white tennis shoes and fresh haircuts. New backpacks, colorful notebooks and pencil cases sit in the corners of bedrooms, kitchens, and mudrooms, in anticipation of the first day of school. Parents are counting the minutes —unless they have kindergartners, in which case, they are fretting them.
Another season come and gone.
INTERSOURCE, too, is looking ahead to a new season while also sporting our own version of white tennis shoes — we’re talking polished new employees! Tom Gross and Kelly Dahlman come to INTERSOURCE with a bounce in their step and a zest for making new relationships and providing excellent customer service. While the rest of us were plugging away at work, Sue Kimal (Commercial Account Manager) took a day to hang-out with the President —the president of IFMA (International Facility Management Association), that is. INTERSOURCE was the President’s Golf Cart Sponsor at this year’s IFMA Golf Tournament which meant Sue got to deck out a golf cart with INTERSOURCE paraphernalia and tool around the course with the IFMA president, who happily sported a carpet flapper dress custom made with tender loving care by Sue!

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. INTERSOURCE always tries to operate by this maxim, and by once again supporting the Design for a Difference (DFAD) movement, we hope we are succeeding.

With gardening season finally here, we’re setting our sights on growing more than just pretty flowers. Quite contrary to the nursery rhyme, we don’t need silver bells or cockle shells to grow our garden; we aim to grow our relationship with you!
Since our job is to make yours easier, we strive to provide exceptional service in an environment that stays fresh and varied. Tending our metaphorical garden means making perennial changes; next time you stop in, you will find new sample displays for ease of use in solving your design challenges, and our product lines are constantly being weeded, pruned and planted to provide the best offerings possible.
We’ve recently updated our website for a better user experience and our staff composition is changing as well. INTERSOURCE added a vibrant new employee this winter: Meet Sue Kimal, our new commercial sales Account Manager. Look here to learn more about Sue and why we think you’re really going to like her!
We are also welcoming a new residential Account Manager to our team. Tom Gross will be adding some great new energy and talent to INTERSOURCE. We look forward to introducing him to you soon!
Speaking of new sprouts, Karah had a baby girl this winter. Consequently we have ourselves a new floor covering mascot, already growing like a weed – but much, much, more beautiful! (On a side note, we are thrilled to report that Karah is back to the office full-time!)
In terms of adding more beauty to the planet, we had the great honor of working with Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interiors on a very special project. Last fall, Lucy, along with INTERSOURCE, were the proud regional winners of Design for a Difference (DFAD) 2014. Check out Lucy’s makeover video here and the grand prize winning makeover video here.
This year, DFAD is not a competition, it’s a full-on movement! In collaboration with Lucy and her team, we are spreading the word of this grass-roots campaign to affect positive change in our communities. Please stay tuned for more information in the coming months.

2014 brought great new staff to INTERSOURCE:
Peggy joins us as an Account Manager, Krista as the Director of First Impressions, and Erin is our new Project Coordinator/Expeditor. Soon there will be another new face added to the Our People page. Come February, INTERSOURCE will be welcoming Sue Kimal as an Account Manager for Commercial Sales. Sue is a motivated people-person with a great sense of humor and a vast knowledge of the industry including a great understanding of the technical side of commercial floor covering from her 20 + years of Commercial Interior Design experience. We think she’s going to be a great fit and a wonderful resource for our clients.

The end of summer brought some happy news!
First, our efforts to promote Design for a Difference, a national interior design contest that gives the winning charity a space makeover worth $25,000 in retail goods and services, and four regional winners $2,000 in goods and services towards their makeovers, proved to be fruitful for our community. Local designer and our treasured client, Lucy Penfield of Lucy Interiors, won the Midwest Region with her thoughtful makeover design for Free Arts Minnesota. We were honored to promote the contest and collaborate on the project. Thanks to many generous donations, Lucy was able to complete her full vision for the space. The other happy news we received a few months back was wonderful recognition by the University of Minnesota which we are proud to share:
Riding the good vibes wave, we quickly landed into December where we hosted the ASID Holiday Party for its members. It was a jolly event, with live holiday music, scrumptious vittles, gorgeous flowers donated by Wisteria, and most importantly, an eclectic bunch of talented design professionals brimming with holiday cheer.

Eric and Nancy spent last week in Las Vegas discovering great new product for the coming year, which also marks the start of INTERSOURCE’s 20th year in business!

It’s that time of year again: Holiday plans are forming, Black-Friday advertisements are being flung on to the driveway in translucent green plastic bags disguised as news (only to learn Black-Friday is on Thursday this year), outdoor holiday lights are popping up little by little, and even though you haven’t quite lost last year’s extra stuffing, the words “Please pass the mashed potatoes” are already forming on your lips. Gym memberships are extended or reactivated, wishful-thinking items top your “wish” list; things like cross country skis, jump ropes, tennis shoes, elastic waist bands. ‘Tis the season.
And, ‘tis the season to give thanks.
The prevailing theme for INTERSOURCE’s staff this year is feeling incredibly grateful for good health, family and friends. Here are a few others:
Mary – Blessed at the promise of becoming a grandmother for the first time this spring.
Eric – Thankful for the INTERSOURCE staff and the laughter they bring to the office, plus his beautiful wife, strong girls, wacky dogs and cycling.
Karah – Grateful for a long weekend.
Don – Great coworkers and the happy energy at INTERSOURCE.
Nancy – All the wonderful people in her life, plus fires in the fireplace, music, and most importantly – LOVE!
Amy – Thankful for lazy days where there’s nothing to do but hunker down with her spouse, 2 kids and funny little dog.

International Market Square (IMS) has initiated an ongoing program called FYI@IMS. On the first Thursday of each month, four participating and diverse showrooms, varying each month, will host a session geared towards the needs of the design professional. Presentations could include spotlighting new or existing product lines ranging from fabrics, lighting, flooring, area rugs, art, kitchen and bath, to educational and motivational seminars. Presentation times will be scheduled at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, each taking approximately 45 minutes. Plan to come for one, some, or all.
INTERSOURCE will be participating in our first FYI @ IMS on Thursday December 5th at 2:00PM.
Travel back in time at INTERSOURCE (IMS Suite 190) for Afternoon Tea and Biscuits while discovering the beauty of DuChateau Floors. Jay Weinfuss will capture your imagination presenting wide-plank floor covering replicating European styles from centuries ago, along with the DuChateau Vinyl Deluxe line, and the Earnest Hemingway Collection. January 16th, 2013 marked the 17th anniversary of INTERSOURCE, the day two high school sweet hearts finally realized the implications of a heart-shaped candy given so many years ago: “You Floor Me!” it read – or at least it’s conceivable they gave one saying that, along with “Be Mine”, “U R Cute”, and “XOXO”.
17 years ago, with baby in belly, INTERSOURCE was born in the basement of Eric and Nancy’s then Bryn Mawr home. (Their first-born daughter arrived four months later…in a hospital.) With two infants – one a baby, one a company – they settled in for the long-haul. All these years later, INTERSOURCE has grown into a twelve-person team located in International Market Square and their family into a busy house-hold with two teenaged daughters and an unflappable blue-eyed husky. The parallels of business ownership and parenthood have not gone unnoticed: the exhilaration, the sleepless nights, the protectiveness, the teachable moments, the unexpected lessons, the learning to let-go while keeping boundaries intact. Through the ups and downs, Eric and Nancy find themselves, 17 years into this life-changing commitment, filled with deep pride and, even more so, grateful hearts for all those who have helped them along the way.
Unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to Cassie White who has been an excellent support person for the team. Life has a way of pulling you back by your roots and so it is for Cassie. She is returning to her hometown in Des Moines, IA. She will be missed, but we wish her all the best in all that awaits her back home.
As we carefully select the right support person to replace Cassie, please feel free to pass on our name to any candidates you feel would be great contributors to our company. Adding someone new to the team is always a thoughtful process and always a bit of a gamble; but on the other hand, it can end up a perfect match.
Speaking of gambling, not that they are the gambling types, but Eric and Nancy recently took to Vegas for a two-part escapade. No, not to try their hand at Black Jack followed by a bender at the slot machines, but to follow-through on a bet they placed last year when they became exclusive members of International Design Guild (IDG), a robust luxury floor covering alliance that offers programs to members including access to exclusive products, benefits of collective buying, and excellent operational tools; the second part of their trip was attending Surfaces, an annual floor covering industry-wide event bringing together buyers and sellers from across the globe to network, learn and explore new product.
